Governance, Risk and Compliance in the Bailiwick of Guernsey

The Anti-Fraud Playbook

Mon, 28 June 2021 at 12:10 PM

In 2021, it is no longer a case of “if” a business or client may be affected by fraud, but rather “when”.

The Anti-Fraud Playbook is a tool published by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners in conjunction with Grant Thornton. We will discuss why officeholders need to consider fraud risk and how the primary responsibility for the prevention and detection of fraud rests with those charged with governance of an entity, and its management.

They will then discuss the Phases and Plays of Fraud and Risk Management, including:-

1. Fraud Risk Governance;
2. Fraud Risk Assessment;
3. Fraud Control Activities;
4. Investigations and Corrective Action; and
5. Fraud Monitoring.

Andrea Harris is a Director in Grant Thornton’s Recovery and Re-organisation Team. Andrea is a Fellow of INSOL International, a Chartered Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. She has a wealth of experience that has been gained globally with work domiciled in Australia, Bermuda, Barbados, the BVI, Cayman and the Channel Islands, and she has taken appointments as Liquidator, Administrator, Administration Manager and Director over various entities. Andrea is a member of the Insolvency Rules Committee, appointed by the States of Guernsey to draft rules of procedure to operate the Companies Law. Andrea is also a member of the Organising Committee of the annual INSOL Channel Islands seminar.

Oliver Beaton is a Manager in Grant Thornton’s Recovery and Re-organisation Team. Oliver is a qualified accountant and has significant experience in solvent, insolvent and compulsory liquidations in jurisdictions including Guernsey, Jersey, Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands. Oliver also focuses on complex fraud and forensic investigations. Oliver trained with a Big 4 firm, and arrived at Grant Thornton from another offshore restructuring and insolvency firm.
